How to remove a background

Choose a photo, pick a quality and press the button. The first run downloads the model, which takes a few seconds; after that it is kept by your browser. When the cut-out appears you can put a colour behind it, then download a PNG.

Why nothing is uploaded

A small machine-learning model runs inside this page and works out which pixels belong to the person. Your photo never leaves the device you are holding, so it stays private even on a shared computer — and the tool keeps working if your connection drops once the model has loaded.

What it is good at

This is a portrait model: it is trained to separate a person from a background. Portraits, half-body shots and group photos are what it does well. A document, a card, a product on a table or a landscape has no person in it, so the result comes out blank — that is the model telling you it found nothing, not a failure of the tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. There is no server in this tool. Everything happens in the page you are looking at, which is also why it keeps working if your connection drops after the model has loaded.

Photos of people. The model was trained to separate a person from a background, so a portrait, a half-body shot or a group photo is what it is good at. A document, a screenshot, a product on a table or a landscape will come out blank — it is looking for a person and there is none.

The same model at two precisions. Fast is a compressed build: a 7 MB download and a few seconds, good for checking whether a photo will work. Compression costs detail, so an arm or a sleeve can blur into a pale smudge. Best quality is the full-precision build at 26 MB — it keeps those parts intact, and it is the one to use before you save anything.

The model has to be downloaded the first time. After that your browser keeps it, so the next photo starts straight away.

On a computer, yes, when the browser allows it — that is what makes it quick. On a phone it deliberately does not: mobile graphics drivers drop the task half-way through and hand back a damaged picture, so the processor is used instead. Slower, but the same result every time.

The model occasionally keeps a pale object that looks like part of a person. Anything left over that is not joined to the subject and is smaller than a twentieth of it is removed automatically. A second person standing well apart is far bigger than that, so they are kept.

A PNG with a real transparent background, so you can drop it onto any colour or any other picture. You can also pick a solid colour here before you download.
